Rex Walls
Rex Walls is a very interesting character in the novel. I think even the most interesting part of the novel. Living with him must not have been the easiest, but reading about him kept me intrigued in the book, and I think if it weren't for his mischievous adventures, the book would be a quarter as interesting. He may have been a drunk and most of the things he did where bad, but reading the novel to me it seemed like an exciting life other then the malnutrition and poverty. I think when Rex dies, even though few years ago Jeannet lost all her faith in him, she still feels emotional and after all these years, she thinks about doing the skedaddle. "I had this crazy urge to scoop him up in her arms and charge through the doors, and check out Rex Walls style one last time". Even at the first Walls reunion after Rex's death, even Rose Mary claims that life was never boring with their father. When John asked to make a toast to Rex, Rose Mary thinks and then says; " I've got it, life was never boring with your father." It's kind of a sad ending to the book when they are all seperated and barely keeping in conact and even Maureen moves away to California.

The glass Castle
This novel portrays the damage alcohol can do to a family.. The father is a severe drunk and cannot cut his addiction. The whole family is affected by his drinking problem and you can see that the wife is scared to leave him. I believe she is scared of what he will do to her if she leaves him because of the anger jolts he gets when he is very intoxicated. In some ways I think the hardships Rex puts his children through toughen them up. I believe both parents are too lazy and unfit to be parents, but they for sure show love for their children and i am not completely against there parenting methods although they take the method a little far. The children learn how to take care of themselves at an early age and can almost live on their own before I even mastered my own language. In my opinion, they did a hell of a job raising the first 3 children and I think they will do good in life even though they started out with nothing. Maureen on the other hand came at a bad time because the fathers life is beginning to rot and he is around less and less. The point im trying to make is that a distorted family's children may have an upper hand on other children that are babied their whole lives.
